The stuff of nightmares for Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool can’t afford any more slip-ups

Verdict from Reds’ 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace as Eagles swoop to secure third successive Anfield win

Christian Benteke had just delivered the killer blow when the away end broke into song.

“You must be sick of us,” they crowed. Right to the back teeth.

For the third successive season, Crystal Palace stormed Anfield.

Not content with wrecking Steven Gerrard’s farewell and inflicting the first defeat of Jurgen Klopp’s reign, they completed the hat-trick by putting a sizeable dent in the Reds’ Champions League hopes.

For Klopp, this was the stuff nightmares are made of.

If the triumphs of recent weeks pointed to a more resilient, more streetwise Liverpool, they reverted to type on a demoralising afternoon.

The defensive frailties which have dogged the Reds throughout this rollercoaster campaign reared their ugly head once again. Old habits really do die hard.
